I’m amazed that so many couples choose to go to the movies for their first date! I guess going to the movies seems pretty straightforward, I mean, we all know how to DO IT, right? Well, there are several “potentially awkward opportunities” when you go to a movie for a first date. So let’s tackle some. Let’s make it fun!

Potentially awkward moment #1: The ticket line.

What do you do while waiting in line? It can be torture standing there together, shuffling like sheep. The conversation will not seem natural because when you are waiting in line, there are other people in your space. Chances are there are couples around you holding hands. It depends on your level of interest, but holding hands most likely doesn’t come naturally at this stage. So let’s avoid all this and agree that one of you will pick up the tickets early. Awkward moment #1, handled.

Potentially Awkward Moment #2: The snack counter.

Wow, there is no line, since you already have your tickets. Here you can find out how flexible your date is towards something like popcorn. Do you both like butter/salt? Excellent! Otherwise, agree to get popcorn separately. But if you both like the same combo, by all means, share! Have fun and go a little crazy with the shaker ingredients – try something new. Make it your goal to interact. You’ll know after today how your date likes their popcorn. Make sure to buy something sweet, like Skittles. You can share them later, during awkward moment #4, below.

Potentially Awkward Moment #3: Seating Choices.

Don’t wear heels. I know myself, and it’s a challenge not to stumble in a dark theater even with normal shoes! Hell, I trip even with the lights on! Once you have chosen your seats, you will feel “stuck” there, and this can be uncomfortable. Now is the time to speak, quietly. Maybe you’ll comment on the layout of the theater, the movie itself, other movies you’ve seen with the same actors. Taste your popcorn. Find out if they are left-handed. Turn off your cell phones. Managed.

Potentially Awkward Moment #4: The Feature

How to sit in a dark movie theater and pay attention to the movie without feeling like you’re ignoring your date? Talking is not okay in the movies! Maybe there’s chemistry and you’re having a hard time even concentrating on the movie. Why not get your date involved: after a shocking or funny scene, you can look at them wide-eyed and smile really big! During a boring scene transition, why not give them some Skittles or whatever candy you’re eating? Don’t ask them if they want any, just take their hand and put the candies on them. Smile. Do not forget to smile. Try to pay attention to the movie as best you can, and try to pick up some funny new lines that you can share later as a memory that the two of you have now, a kind of inside joke that will help bond the two of you. two of you
