Newton was a famous mathematician, astronomer, and physicist. One of his most famous contributions to the world of physics was his three laws of motion. One of which includes the first law of his known as the Law of Inertia.

So all you must be thinking, what is that? I have never heard of such a thing! Well, for starters, inertia is basically a tendency to do nothing and remain unchanged. Newton’s Law of Inertia is when an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by a sudden or unbalanced force. The moving object continues with the same speed and direction unless another unbalanced force acts on it. An unbalanced force is also known as what we call a net force.

What the hell does all this mean? All this basically means that there is a natural tendency for objects to continue with what they are doing or doing. To make it much simpler for all of you, a great example of Newton’s Law of Inertia is something we’ve all experienced, which is when you’re in a car braking at a stop. The force given on the road on the wheels gives an unbalanced force to the car’s state of motion, which means there is no unbalanced force to change its OWN state of motion. Also, your body is still moving, sliding along the seat moving forward. A moving person in motion remains at the same speed and direction UNLESS acting on an unbalanced force, such as a seat belt. Seat belts demonstrate Newton’s law.

Another, easier example that beautifully demonstrates Newton’s Law of Inertia is a tablecloth that is quickly removed from under the dishes. The dishes tend to stay as still as possible if the friction from the movement of the tablecloth is not excessive. An interesting one is how lesions occur in the brain. When a human being is experiencing a concussion, that is because the human’s brain is still moving while the outer skull is stationary, and that is what causes the injuries. The point is that we’ve probably all experienced Newton’s Law of Inertia, whether we realize it or not.
