The Red Velvet Swordtail adds that sparkle to any fish tank. Aquariums need variety and Swordtail will definitely bring a splash of color to your tank. The Red Velvet Swordtail ranges from 2 to 5 inches in length and belongs to the tropical fish group or community aquarium fish.

The Red Velvet Swordtail fish is an omnivore that feeds on protein such as worms, larvae, etc. However, they can also eat plant and animal matter. They react better to live foods, but will still eat frozen and freeze-dried foods. Vegetables are a plus, like canned peas. For a consistent staple, use Pellets or Fish Flakes. Feed Livebearer species twice a day rotating between vegetables and protein. Most omnivores need a balanced diet, so if you have a few different omnivores in your tank, put them on the same feeding cycle.

Life carriers like the Red Velvet Swordtail fish swim in the middle and upper sections of the tank. Keep a good variety of fish in the tank so you don’t have a group of different species of fish fighting for space at the top, middle, or bottom. Viviparous are like the bunnies in the fish tank. They can bring out new fish quickly. They tend to reproduce a bit faster than most fish, so don’t be surprised one morning to see a few extra guppies splashing around your tank. Red Velvet Swordtails don’t lay eggs, they have live babies, so for the little ones that are born alive, make sure you have some decent hiding places so they don’t get swallowed by other fish.

Viviparous need hydrogen peroxide but do not like forced movement of water. Find a bubbler to add oxygen to the water. Livebearers also need a little salt. Two teaspoons of salt for a normal 10 gallon fish tank will do.

Other Livebearers available include Molly, Sailfin Molly, Platy, and good old Guppy.
