Domain companies would love for each of us to have 10 domains, but the reality is that we are wasting our money buying more than one, possibly two. Do not be fooled; here are the facts.

Although the companies that sell domain names lead you to believe that it is essential that you own multiple domain names for your business, it is likely a complete waste of money.

The argument for buying multiple domains is to prevent other companies from getting a name like yours. While this may have been an interesting idea, the reality is that most people will write the name you advertise.

This being the case, if you advertise [http://www.yourcompanyname.com.au] owning http://www.yourcompanyname.info is unlikely to be beneficial to you or [http://www.yourcompanyname.net.au]. After all, why would people suddenly use that name?

If you have a product that you are marketing here in Australia, if possible, secure the domain name with a .com.au ending. This is the most commonly recognized domain name in Australia. If someone was unsure of their domain name, it is most likely the ending they will put after their name.

That being said, they are getting harder and harder to come by which is why there are so many name combinations. This includes .biz or .info and a number of other combinations. If your primary marketing is through search engines then that is fine, however if it is traditional marketing means, try getting the .com.au if it gives people confidence that your business is an Australian company .

Many “junket” websites use “alternate” end domains simply because they save some money buying them. Like most people, I am always cautious, even a bit skeptical, with these domains and will always choose a .com.au where I know they have an Australian registered trade name and ABN. I immediately knew that they have gone through a verification process because you cannot buy a .com.au name within a registered trade name and ABN.

People who are selling domain names will tell you stories about how buying many domains protects you and is better for your business, the reality is that it is better for your commissions and your business. I would suggest putting your money in a place where you can earn money. a good website.

Warning

Do not work or believe in web development companies trying to sell you multiple domain names with the intention of setting them up to point to your website. Is this specifically declared by Google as one of the areas that they do not consider acceptable within Google’s terms and conditions of use? In plain plain English, you can end up getting your website banned by Google.
