Synopsis:

So in the last week or so I had the opportunity to sit down and play Until Dawn, Sony’s exclusive PlayStation 4 game. A game that follows teenagers as they head to a mountain cabin for a fun-filled, action-packed weekend with their friends. Although this mountain is not what it seems and when you arrive, you find yourself involved in a journey of epic and terrifying proportions. Battle your way through this terrifying experience while constantly on the edge of your seat wondering if everyone will die or who will be left standing. In a sense, this game is very similar to the cabin in the woods horror movies that will come out in theaters from time to time, but where this game differs is an excellent story with great character development. Let us now see what are some of the positive and negative aspects of the game.

Positives:

There are many things that I love about this game. One thing I particularly enjoyed was the good use of quick-time events that allowed you to help decide where you were going in the story. To add to that, it was amazing to see a game where the decisions you make really do make a difference to the overall story. For example, if something happens one way, you won’t be able to see a certain section of the story, or if you do something another way, you might come across something you don’t normally see. All of the branching of story lines was extremely well done and offers tremendous replay value. So if you were wondering if this game is worth the $60 price tag, it definitely is. Another thing that I personally enjoyed about the game was the overall aesthetic. While playing the game, you feel almost completely immersed in what is happening and if you look away for a second, you run the risk of something bad happening.

Negatives:

It is difficult to identify any specific problem with the game. It worked great and I never noticed any drops in frame rate or anything like that. If I had to mention something, I would say that between chapters there were recaps similar to TV shows that you couldn’t skip. For some people, it might be nice to just add a simple skip option if you’re playing a chapter and don’t want to watch it all the time.

Conclusion:

Overall, Until Dawn is everything you’d want in a horror game and more. Combining a beautiful and immersive environment with a great story and fantastic character development. In my opinion, this game deserves a 9.5/10, which marks an overall fantastic game.
