This clinic also aims to reduce patient pain by offering a symbiotic relationship between medical and dental patients. Many times medical issues are identified by dental students and a referring doctor is brought in to treat the problem. The partnership helps patients receive more care at less cost and gives students valuable hands-on experience.
The clinic is staffed by third-year and fourth-year dental students. They perform triage and other tasks, such as x-rays. The volunteers are under the supervision of a faculty member.
They also provide an array of other services such as dental screenings and a free comprehensive exam. Several times a year, they also have an outreach program for low-income residents. These programs provide dental screenings, cleanings and vouchers for additional dental care and services. The first event in February provided care to 514 patients. The second is scheduled for August.
