Training a Yorkshire terrier can be more difficult than with many other breeds. Dogs are usually domesticated around six months of age. If your Yorkie is over six months old and still having accidents around the house, here are 7 tips on what you can do.

  • Keep a strict routine and don’t deviate from it. Dogs are like children and will benefit from a schedule that doesn’t change.
  • If your work schedule changes from one day to the next, ask someone else in your household to take responsibility for training your Yorkie. It will also be beneficial to have a single person in charge of this task.
  • Keep your dog confined to a kennel or small enclosure when you are not around. Dogs generally will not go to the bathroom where they sleep, so it is very important to keep this area small.
  • When your Yorkshire terrier makes the slightest sound or moves suddenly, take him outside immediately. Be sure to praise your dog as soon as he goes to the bathroom outside.
  • Be sure to take your dog out as late as possible before going to sleep each night. Younger dogs simply cannot control their bladders for long periods of time.
  • Keep your Yorkie’s enclosure clean at all times. If your dog smells urine, a blanket, or a pillow, he’ll feel it’s okay to go potty there.
  • Be patient and consistent. This is important with any type of dog training, especially training.

I encourage you to learn more about how to train your Yorkshire terrier. These small dogs require extra attention and training to be the best pets possible.
