Each family develops its own unique Christmas traditions. Christmas is a season where some traditions are passed down from generation to generation, while others are born out of a desire to do something new and meaningful for the family unit. Family traditions create happy holiday memories for young and old. For many people, the food associated with the event is as important a memory as the event itself, for example, a pizza to snack on while the tree is trimmed.

Whatever you choose, consider making it a tradition each year to enjoy the same snack or meal while making your home festive for the holidays. One of our house traditions that has carried over into the third generation is that our Christmas morning menu always revolves around oyster chowder and Christmas bread…before the presents are opened.

The new Christmas pajamas is another tradition that evokes good memories and adorable pictures. If the presents are opened on Christmas morning, let the children open a Christmas Eve present: the new Christmas pajamas. Consider having a sleepover while you wait for Santa! Dress everyone in a new pair of Christmas pajamas and play games, sing Christmas carols or watch Christmas movies during the Christmas Eve festivities.

Another tradition that kids (in their Christmas pajamas) will enjoy is making and decorating homemade cookies to keep out Santa and his reindeer. Pack the extras in pretty containers to give to friends and family on Christmas day. Kids love to “camp,” so consider sleeping in sleeping bags in front of the Christmas tree one night. Eat snacks, leave the lights on all night and make a special memory!

There are fabulous fabrics – fleece, velor, flannel and other fabrics available that make wonderful children’s Christmas pajamas. You may want to start a new Christmas tradition and take advantage of free time during the summer. It’s a proud moment when you can check something off your holiday ‘to-do list’ long before the stress and pressure of the holidays arrive and you can look forward to the pictures of the kids in their new holiday pajamas you made for them.
