American Idol features America’s best young vocal talent and consistently delivers high-quality performances to viewers around the world. However, there’s no denying that viewers also like to focus on train wreck specials on American Idol, like William Hung. So, the following advice for getting into American Idol falls into two halves, depending on whether you want to get airtime on American Idol for talent or… something else.

1. You must become familiar with a wide variety of different types of songs to get into American Idol. The show asks its contestants to move between different genres. Make a song your own; cheer up a country song or vice versa.

2. Spend as much time acting on stage as possible. Practice a cappella as much as you can, because there will be no accompaniment when you audition for American Idol.

3. Make sure your voice is healthy; do not abuse or misuse it during an ambition.

4. This may seem simple, but it bears repeating: understand your song and feel the lyrics. You need to make sure that you choose a song that you can infuse with your passion and energy.

5. Don’t make the mistake of impersonating Christina Aguilera or Mariah Carey. Be yourself. Scouts want to hear someone fresh and unique, just like TV viewers.

1 Give the judges an attitude if they tell you you’re horrible. Reject any constructive criticism you are given, and remain oblivious to any suggestion that you should keep your day job.

2. Have a good story. If you have a good story behind your audition, you might be able to get some airtime. Remember that girl who pawned her wedding ring to come to the audition? Although she was written out of the show, she appeared in magazines, entertainment shows, and was covered by news about ongoing developments involving people buying their new wedding rings.

3. Find some trick or prank that gets attention. In one season, a scooter girl from New York came to audition for her on a scooter. A girl got airtime for singing scat style and ending with a loud scream. Scat girl actually gained airtime in several commercials. Sinatra-like artists also got decent airtime, reaching the finals in Los Angeles. The lesson: If you’re not afraid of embarrassing yourself, you can get noticed on American Idol pretty easily.

4. Flub the letters. Often, shows will have montages dedicated to singers who get the lyrics wrong.

5. Bring the mothers on stage. Onstage moms can cause a lot of ruckus inside auditions, fuming, crying and screaming when their kids don’t make the cut.

6. Wear crazy outfits. The show also runs a montage of people dressed as mimes, nuns, magicians, lingerie, military uniforms, etc. Although you may not get much airtime with this, you will be able to manage a few seconds.
