The Staffy puppy jump is a reality when it comes to having a Staffy dog. All the puppies will jump. It is a natural habit for them, especially when they live with humans. The challenge is that initially, your jumping young Staffy pup can be quite cute. However, in the long run it can cause problems. Here are 3 tips that will work for you and your Staffordshire bull terrier puppy and a jump-free life.

1. Don’t reward your Staffy puppy with affection

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are affectionate dogs, as any Staffy owner will tell you. They like nothing more than to greet their owner by jumping to scratch or tickle him.

Now dogs are not human and when they feel that you are affectionate towards them, they perceive that they have done something to be praised for, that is, jump.

Although it may be difficult when you get home, ignore your Staffy if they are jumping towards you. Avoid eye contact at all costs and turn your back to them. They will soon be gone.

2. Reward positive behavior.

Once they are gone. Then you can greet them. Get close to them and crouch down. Hold them by the neck and stroke them. The moment they start jumping towards you. Use a no command. Or walk away. You can also use a treat here to reinforce the behavior. Helpful for everyone to make sure they have some kibble in their pocket.

3. Be consistent at all levels

The thing about Staffy’s puppy training is that you have to be consistent. This is a dog that loves affection and will try to get it from other members of the family. So you MUST make sure everyone behaves the same then your Staffy will get the message. In other words, “If I jump I don’t get a hug. If I sit and wait, I do.”

Remember that Staffy are intelligent dogs, do not misjudge the joy and happy smile for lack of intelligence. It is quite the opposite.
